This is the story of Rusty and Becky Porter, a newlywed couple that, to some, seemed like an unlikely pair. Rusty was a young man who had struggled with drugs and alcohol. Becky, 10 years Rusty Sr., was a mother and a very active church member. Together they filled the gaps of what each of their lives had been missing. And they were together when a dark fate forced them to leave behind what could have been a beautiful life.

Mom and dad bought the farm, 120 acres. From 1957, it's been in our family.

My son, Rusty, and his wife, Becky, was living in the farmhouse. And I lived behind them in the Double Wide.

Rusty and Becky live in a two-story house painted white with a gray roof. There is an American flag hanging out front. Tucked away behind it on the side of the property is a modest ranch home where Kay lives.

I always made it a practice that I didn't bother people. Whenever you live that close to people, you've got to respect their privacy. So I didn't go down there very much at all.

On April 18, 2011, at 11.03 a.m., Kay worries that something isn't quite right.

When I woke up that morning, it was just another day in the life of a farm.

Went to the front and, well, just going out on the porch to swing on the porch like I always do. And I noticed Becky's car was down there.

And I knew she was supposed to be at work.

Ever since I've known Becky, she's always been a good employee.

So when I seen Becky's car there, I thought last night she was sick.

So I wondered if she was still sick and didn't make it to work, because she's usually gone around 7.30. She has to be at work at 8.

Things just didn't feel right.

Later that day, just past midnight on April 19th, 2011, Becky's daughter calls 911.

Yes, I am trying to get a hold of my mother. The lights are on in the house. The door is open. I have knocked. I have called. I mean, I'm really worried about her, and I'm scared to go in the house by myself.

Bob Falk, a private investigator, describes the scene as police respond to the call.

First deputy arrived on the scene and approached the door and smelled a strong smell of bleach coming out of the house.

He then saw that the screen was cut to the kitchen window.

There is a bed half torn apart in the master bedroom.

There was obviously a sign of a struggle in the bedroom.

Initially, this looked like a burglary gone wrong, but with the valuables still left in the house and the porters both missing, Green County detectives very quickly realized that this was something a bit more sinister, and they called in a full team to rope off the area and start a full-blown investigation.

At the Porter residence, the deputies get a search warrant from a judge, and they did a more thorough search of the home.

And they found things that ratcheted up the level of concern. Morley Swingle is a former U.S. attorney. For one thing, they found that Rusty's medication was still in the home, and Rusty used that medication daily because of a cancer operation he'd had, so it seemed unlikely he would have voluntarily left it.

And they discover that Becky's purse is lying there, her wallet is still there, there's cash still there, her credit cards are still there.

The house reeked of bleach, but the only bottle of bleach that was on the scene was full.

And that seemed odd because the bleach was so fresh there were still puddles, yet there's no empty bottle in the trash or anywhere else.

When you smell bleach that strong coming from a house, it's indicating that somebody tried to clean up an area rather quickly. There's several things that would raise suspicion.

There's cables torn from the wall. There's a computer monitor laying over on its side with no tower.

There were several cameras in the yard and several cameras that were disabled.

It didn't seem there was anything missing other than the computer that recorded the security cameras.

The security cameras really caused alarm the more the investigators looked into it because Becky's daughter said that those were new, that her mother had not even had security cameras. And there were a large number of security cameras looking at all angles of the exterior of the home. What was clear was that somebody did not want what was on those surveillance cameras to ever be found.

I was 11 when Rusty came along, and he was a typical little brother. I mean, sometimes he was really cool, and sometimes he was just a nuisance.

The very first day that I heard that they were missing, you know, you just think, oh my goodness, my brother's missing. It's got to be a mistake. It's got to be a mistake. Somebody's doing this, and it's a mistake.

Security cameras were very uncommon out in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the country. And maybe Rusty did it for Becky's security so that she would feel safer out there.

We were friends, but more than that, we ministered on the same team with church, worshiping the Lord. Bruce Bellin is Becky's friend from church. I was very shocked that they were missing.

I was upset that they were missing. What in the world could have happened, different scenarios, going down every path that you could go.

It's very shocking and it was what everyone was talking about.

Various theories emerged to try and explain a motive for the couple's disappearance.

A lot of people thought that because Rusty had a rocky past that maybe he got back involved with drugs and alcohol and maybe he owed somebody money could have been a motivation for his disappearance.

I think Becky encouraged him to do what he needed to do, to not go back with the people who might have influenced him in a bad way. I think they were headed in the right direction.

You know, you just wonder where they are.

and are they okay are they being abused there was all kinds of speculations that was going around you know the mexican cartel was around and and there was all kinds of truckers around that could have put them in the truck and took them to who knows where

Was this a situation of domestic violence where one of them had done something terrible to the other and then fled to dispose of a body? Was this a home invasion gone wrong? Was this a kidnapping? There were a lot of bad possibilities and very few good possibilities at this point.

On April 20th, 2011, three days after Becky and Rusty Porter are reported missing, investigators have more questions than answers.

Detectives continued their investigation. On the third full day since anyone has seen the couple, questions still plague Becky Porter's family. You know there's foul play when you find a house wide open and a car sitting there with the keys in it.

Some of the things that were coming out on the news, I mean, when you start talking about the smell of bleach and people leaving their stuff there, if you're going somewhere, you take your wallet and you take your stuff and you don't leave your keys in your car.

When I first heard of Rusty and Rebecca Porter's disappearance, I wanted to help. So I decided to print missing person posters for Russ and Becky.

They were put up in every convenience store, every gas station, every grocery store, every truck stop, every restaurant.

You don't have to know somebody to help somebody. Just because we didn't know them doesn't mean that we weren't willing to be there for them. And putting up flyers was one of the easiest ways to help.

As investigators speak to the family members, it turns out that one family member, Bob Campbell, Rusty's uncle, was someone who had been in some conflict with Rusty.

Bob Campbell is 66 years old. He's an over-the-road truck driver.

He lives a quarter of a mile away from Rusty.

As investigators look further into the relationship between Bob Campbell and Rusty, they find that there's a history of disturbances where Bob Campbell had come to Rusty's home and they'd had arguments.

And they also find documentation that within three weeks of Rusty's disappearance, each of the two of them, Rusty and Bob, had gotten orders of protection for each to stay away from the other one.

Right here to the left of the driveway is the starting of the property. Rob's trailer sat there until he bought a new trailer and put up upper end of the farm.

My brother and I have always been close. But Rob was upset about Rusty and Becky living at the house. He did not want them down there at all.

He knew that half of the farm was mine. We'd already discussed all that and everything. But I think he felt like that everything was still his.

Seeing how close Robert Campbell and the porters lived to each other, there was a lot of arguments, a lot of verbal disputes, and some physical altercations in the past.

Bob Fock, the private investigator, finds an ominous quote in the restraining order.

In Rusty's restraining order against Robert Campbell, he wrote that Robert had passed by the house in his vehicle and yelled out the window, you won't be around much longer.

Was he the reason that these security cameras had been put up?

They had only been married for about a year before they disappeared.

Investigators learned that Becky had been married before she met Rusty to a man named Terence Frazier, who was a pastor at her church.

They'd had a contentious divorce, and Becky and he had been divorced for only four months when Becky met Rusty online.

You know, he had had struggles with drugs and alcohol, and, you know, it was no secret.

When he met Becky, though, she was like a breath of fresh air. She was beautiful and sweet and intelligent, and, you know, he was on a path to turn his life around, and she was a lot of what made that happen. I will say it was a little bit shocking to several of us in the family because she was quite a bit older than he was.

And so at first, we thought, wow, this might be a mismatch. But it worked. It worked for them.

They seemed to be happy together. Of course, they were like any other couple, and they had their ups and downs. And with her being 10, 12 years older than Rusty, she had different ideas of what she wanted to do with her life, I guess.

She had been married to the family minister for 26 years.

She was not happy with her relationship with him.

and she left and she married Russ.

Now the family was extremely upset about this. Her children still loved her, but they didn't like Russ. So they said they want to have absolutely no part of their mother's relationship.

So they didn't go to the wedding.

When you're looking at the motive of Love Gone Bad, Terrence Frazier was angry about that failed relationship.

Becky's first marriage ended in a very ugly divorce that was contentious over who was going to get to keep a restaurant that the couple owned together.

And this history of marital trouble was a red flag that investigators wanted to look into.

At this point, investigators have two potential suspects.

Becky's ex-husband, Terrence Frazier, and Robert Campbell, the uncle of Rusty.

The last order of protection, I think, that was filed was within a week or two of Rusty and Becky going missing.

Kathy Baird, a local journalist, recalls the ominous phrase Rusty's uncle is recorded saying.

It stated that Robert Campbell yelled from his vehicle to Rusty, you're not going to be around much longer.

It seemed like I covered something about this case damn near every day for several months, as most news organizations in this area were.

to the families or to rusty and becky it's not just a story to them you know it was their loved one and you don't want to be you don't want to do anything to dishonor them becky was well loved not just by her family but by a group of friends and she'd gone through a hard breakup with her first husband Were there problems in that marriage? Obviously, they're divorced. So the obvious suspect is the ex-husband, right?

On April 22, 2011, investigators bring in Becky's ex-husband Terrence for questioning. The couple have been missing for four days.

When you're looking at the motive of Love Gone Bad, Terrence Frazier was angry about that failed relationship.

But Terrence Frazier seemed genuinely sad and remorseful when he found out that she had disappeared, and he seemed to have moved on with his own life and seemed happy in his current situation.

Detectives realized that the ex-husband had been gone for a few days prior to the Porter's disappearance and couldn't have been the likely suspect.

The waiting game and the lack of information was hard because you always felt like the police knew more than they were telling you.

Paula, Rusty's sister, recalls what the investigation was like.

But on the other hand, you didn't want to rush the process because you didn't want to ruin anything that they were doing.

My uncle was looked into as a suspect because Rusty and Uncle Rob did not get along at all.

Rusty had told his friend a lot of unsavory people that might be involved with various property crimes had been coming around there on the Porter family compound.

Maybe this is the reason that Rusty and Becky had had the security cameras installed.

And maybe this had something to do with Rusty's disappearance. And so the situation becomes more and more concerning.

Kathy Baird, the journalist, explains that Rusty and Becky installed the security cameras as a way to insulate them from Robert's wrath.

Becky was concerned about her safety because of the stolen equipment at the property where Robert Campbell lived.

She was concerned that she was going to be made out to be a snitch.

But Robert could not have done it. Robert had an alibi. He was out of town.

Robert's alibi was ironclad.

Private investigator Bob Falk explains. Robert Campbell was a truck driver and was on a long-haul run to Texas during the time of Rusty and Becky's disappearance.

I think when you have an encounter with anybody who is angry with you, you're gonna exchange words and you may have a heated conversation, but I don't think any of us imagine that the person we're having that exchange with is going to take that to a point of violence.

Once Becky's ex-husband and Bob Campbell had been ruled out because of their alibis, leads dried up and investigators are stymied as to what might have happened.

But then another tragedy occurs.

On April 25, 2011, one week after Becky and Rusty are reported missing, the police are called to respond to a double homicide.

An early morning 911 call from the home of Donald and Helen Willingham. We know both the Willinghams were stabbed. It is a homicide that we're investigating. This is probably one of the worst cases in my career at the Greene County Sheriff's Office that I've seen.

Investigators compare the two cases. Like Rusty and Becky, their home had been invaded. Like Rusty and Becky, nothing of particular value had been stolen. And like Rusty and Becky, there were no obvious suspects.

So the question was, is this coincidence or is this related?

And it had everybody wondering, is there a serial killer on the loose?

This is the house where the Willinghams were murdered, right here. It was an early morning, about 5 a.m. The neighbor called 911 shortly after and reported that he had chased off somebody in a black hoodie down the road.

The community was very, very on edge because we did have these two major crimes. Within a week, people were concerned for their safety and whether or not they could be the next house that someone randomly broke into.

It was just mind-blowing some of the similarities. Both women heavily involved in their church. Mr. Willingham, a pastor. Becky was a pastor's wife for a long time. You had to wonder, could they be connected?

Rusty's sister, Sandy, tries to stay positive, but she knows time is not on their side.

Hope is a tricky thing. It's kind of a discipline in a way, because when you find yourself thinking thoughts that are not productive and not positive, hope is the one thing that you have to depend on. And we were so hopeful that they would be found. But the other side of that coin is the reality that time just keeps going by. And I started feeling that that probably would not be the case.

In July 2011, three months after the disappearance of Rusty and Becky Porter, investigators report a break in the second crime, the Willingham murder case.

In July of 2011, there was a gentleman by the name of Jose Huckleberry that was being held on a burglary charge in Greene County.

During a seven and a half hour interrogation, Huckleberry claimed that he was indeed responsible for the murders of Mr. and Mrs. Willingham.

Investigators would eventually conclude that the motives in the Willinghams and the Porters just didn't match and that there really wasn't a connection.

The Porter case remains cold until September 17, 2012, when 17 months after the disappearance of Rusty and Becky Porter, investigators get a new tip.

A jailhouse snitch comes forward, and he says that he has information about the disappearance of Rusty and Becky.

He says that a man named Tony Friend had been bragging that he had taken their birthdays. Now, taking their birthdays is slang for having murdered someone, but jailhouse stitches are notoriously unreliable.

So investigators take this with a grain of salt, but they still want to look into Tony Friend and see if he could have anything to do with this.

Upon researching Tony Friend's cellular records, the detectives were able to get triangulation that proved that Tony Friend was in the area of the Porter's house the night of their disappearance. Private investigator Falk makes another sinister discovery. Also, Tony Friend's cellular records indicated that he had made a trip down to Cedar Creek area, Missouri, the night of the Porter's disappearance.

Rusty's mother, Kay, is puzzled by the connection.

I knew Tony Friend just by acquaintance.

He didn't know Rusty and Becky at all.

They didn't associate.

Tony Friend's name is not unfamiliar to the sheriff's department. He had been involved in various thefts of equipment.

He is currently in the Greene County Jail awaiting charges of receiving stolen property.

They go interview Tony Friend and he is adamant. I didn't even know Rusty and Becky. I had nothing to do with it.

While Tony denies involvement, the police pursue him as a suspect and reach out to Lisa McLaughlin, Tony's cousin.

The family was just kind of split because some of us kids didn't like running around with Tony when he was younger. He was always causing problems and getting in trouble.

I hadn't seen Tony in years, so I didn't know anything was going on with Tony and his family.

The Greene County deputies came and was asking questions.

I would seem to think that if I went missing, that I hope people out there would come and try to help find me for my children's sake.

I mean, even the littlest thing could be the key to solving any mystery or crime. So I was just trying to help by letting them know everywhere Tony had been growing up and places that we hung out as kids.

The bulldozer place that we went to hanging out as kids, that was the first place that I thought.

And the bulldozer place is what I know it by because there was a bulldozer sitting there, and that's what we called it all the time.

I think it's right here, but it's been so long.

At the bulldozer place, you would drive in and it was really rough.

And you just keep driving through this open field until you came to this house and we would all just park around the house.

And us kids would just play and play on that bulldozer and just run around the whole place like we owned it.

Lisa leads the investigators further into the forest where they make a grim discovery.

Lisa leads them back through the dense underbrush to the area where there was an abandoned cabin. And it's dilapidated and falling down.

They get closer to it, and the closer they get, the stronger the odor of decomposition becomes. And when they get inside it, they find that there's a hole in the floor.

And underneath the floor, they can see that a grave has been dug.

This is the scene of the crime and where the bodies were hidden for three months.

There's no structures for quite a while.

You could definitely make a lot of noise out here and nobody would know.

Months of investigation led a deputy to find what sheriffs believed to be the partial skeletal remains of Russell and Rebecca Porter.

We have now officially changed this case from a missing persons case to a homicide.

Ultimately, the bodies were identified through DNA.

It involved an anthropologist working with the medical examiner to determine the cause of death. And they found that each one of them had been killed by a contact wound from a gun being placed right up against the skull, execution style. The medical examiner classified each of their deaths as a homicide.

When you finally find out for sure, there is a relief of at least you can breathe now.

But there's not a peace.

I know that her kids were holding out hope.

I know that for a fight.

And so I don't think it was a relief for them.

It's just a bizarre, really heartbreaking place to be.

Who would do such a thing? How did they get to this place way off out in the woods that was away from everything that we know? It just left as many questions as it answered.

On September 13th, 2012, two months after Rusty and Becky's bodies are found, investigators probe deeper into Tony Friend's contacts.

After Tony Friend's name has come up, it becomes clear that this whole group of family members need to be questioned in more length. Since Tony Friend won't talk, maybe some of these other people might, and they decide to start broadening their investigation and talk to some of these people who've been visiting Bob Campbell on his property.

They find out that Tony's son Philip and a cousin named Dusty had brought a tractor to Bob Campbell's home.

Investigators had obtained the cell phone records of Philip Friend.

As he denies that he was involved at all in the killing, they ultimately confront him with those records. Those records show that his phone was in the area of the Porter's home on the night they disappeared.

They also showed that his phone had been down near Cedar Creek.

On December 17th, 2012, investigators question Philip Friend, who's in jail on theft charges. The following is a recording of Philip's police interrogation.

My dad came to me a week. Philip Friend told investigators everything about that night. Philip, Dusty, and Tony, they were part of the theft ring that was going on.

They put duct tape around their wrists and their ankles so that they would not leave any hair fibers or DNA or skin cells.

They stopped and bought a gallon of bleach.

They went to Robert Campbell's property, parked there, and crept up to the farmhouse where they knocked down the cameras And Tony was upset because there was no way into the house.

But Dusty Hicks finds a kitchen window open.

My dad helped him get into the kitchen.

He unlocked the back door. My dad walked in, I walked in. My dad flipped on the light to their bedroom.

They jumped out of bed.

My dad and Dusty were holding guns at him.

Tony Friend ties them up with zip ties and marches them out of the house and put them in the truck.

They drive out to Cedar Creek, a place that Tony Friend is very intimately familiar with, the bulldozer place.

He marched them into the woods.

Phillip said that about 10 minutes later, Phillip hears one gunshot. About 10 minutes later, he heard another gunshot.

And then he saw his dad walking out of the woods alone.

I can't imagine having to walk that trail barefoot in the dark and having somebody holding a gun on you, knowing you were about ready to die.

I think they knew that they were coming out here to meet their end.

This is going to be your opportunity to actually explain to us who planned what, who participated, and so on and so forth, okay? Did your dad tell you who had asked him to do this job?

He found out, like, from Robert Campbell.

Robert Campbell, the mastermind, hired his brother-in-law to kill his sister's boy. Philip describes a couple of motives for the killing. He says that Robert Campbell was angry if the family homestead had been given to Rusty instead of him, but he also mentions that Robert Campbell had been involved in stolen property.

Robert Campbell wanted the mouths of Rusty and Becky closed because they knew stuff about him.

So basically, Robert Campbell hired his brother-in-law, his wife's brother, to kill Russell for $100,000.

Robert Campbell said, well, if Becky is there, then I guess she's gonna have to go too.

Tony agreed and went home recruited his wife, his son, and his nephew to commit this act.

Armed with Phillip's cooperation, the prosecutor was able to file charges against five individuals. Robert Campbell, the mastermind, he was found guilty of the lesser crime of secondary murder, and he got two life sentences.
